About the project.
Premature infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) are exposed to stress, including high-intensity noise. The maximum noise level recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is 45 dB. However, the noise environment in the NICU exceeds this recommendation, generating annoying noises of short duration and at irregular intervals, varying from 7 dB to 120 dB.
Hearing impairment is diagnosed in 2% to 10% of preterm infants versus 0.1% of the general pediatric population. Exposure to constant high noise can cause in premature infants: apnea, hypoxemia, vasoconstriction, decreased gastric motility and increased secretion of cortisol and catecholamines, alteration in oxygen saturation, and increased oxygen consumption, resulting in tachycardia and tachypnea. Consequently, it can generate an increase in metabolic consumption, reducing growth and producing alterations in the sleep-wake cycle.
Neo seeks to reduce the decibels perceived by neonates to levels recommended by the AAP. By decreasing them, the resulting stress can be reduced; promoting proper growth and reducing adverse short- and long-term consequences. The shape is designed to fit naturally and less invasively to the patient's ear. It is gently inserted into the ear canal without causing damage. Once in place, it seals the ear canal, creating a barrier that reduces perceived noise. The device is also designed for the needs of medical staff. The object's elliptical shape allows it to be removed from its packaging and placed in a comfortable and controlled way in the patient's ear. The hygiene of the device is carried out with soap and water, to be used for as long as the patient requires it. Neo is an effective and long-lasting alternative, developed to withstand the daily routine of the NICU and contribute to the care of newborns during this stage.
